Are you in desperate need of some rest? Find you are juggling more things than you can handle? You are not alone, the statistics say that the average person works more than a 48 hour week. (I’m sure that figure doesn’t include the many hours people work on things outside work.) So with so much to do and without conscious decisions life can be all work and no rest.
I can relate to this myself. It’s early as I write this post. I’m about to go downstairs and cook breakfast for a 60 friends who stayed for our house warming. The last 48 hours I have had limited sleep. This might be more palatable if I’d hadn’t had such a crazy week. Unfortunately for the next few months it’s going to be busy. The kind of busy that no matter how much you plan your day there isn’t much time to economise on.
So how to find time to rest when there isn’t any? He’s how.
1. First of all accept that for a while you will be busy and let go of worrying about it. Yeah, I know this is hard but if there is stuff you can’t change yet in your life I find thinking like this helps.
2. Instead still find time to do what you love but for a shorter spaces of time. Let’s say you can only get to one spin class a week? Appreciate that you can at least do this, and start to relish it.
3 Take power naps and rests. During your lunch take a five minute break in the park. You could also try lying on your back for five minutes after work with your eyes closed and allow your body to surrender into the ground.
4. Get up ten minutes earlier each day, and sit and meditate for at least five minutes.
5.Learn to say no to what doesn’t serve you and yes to what does. So your friend wants you to do something last minute, but she already has people to help and you have a ton of washing to do. You could be the hero and say yes but would that be serving you too? Learn to use your judgement and by all means help when people really need help but also look after yourself in a kind and caring way.
6. More about self-care. I have been the world’s worst for looking after myself in the past. I work hard but if I am tired, I now rest even if it is just for five minutes. Put it this way if we all died tomorrow life would go on. Nothing is that important that it worth sacrificing health.
Finally, remember to take more deep breaths, take in life, and above all enjoy the journey. Ride the busy times like they are waves, and make time for the slow by taking each moment of life as blessing. Rest when you need it.
Remember: grabbing five to ten minutes when you can will make a big difference!
