How to protect yourself against energy stealers
As a yoga teacher, I’m not immune to negative energy. In my life, I’ve experienced my share of energy stealers. Just being in the same room as one can make me feel drained and unhappy.
Energy stealers can come in many forms and levels of severity. A subtle example is someone who keeps talking no matter how many times you tell them you are going to be late. Being a bully, critic, and gossip are some classic ways of stealing energy. There’s also the poor-me victim, the one who blames everyone else for their life except themselves. Being aloof is also another way of taking people’s energy.
Energy stealers aren’t always conscious of what they are doing. Regardless, their aim is to steal energetic aspects of others that they believe they can’t find within themselves. They think this is the only way, but it is not. Each of us has the energetic potential to be anything we want to be, if only we would look to ourselves rather than to others to feel complete.
Still, it’s not all doom and gloom there are also positive energy-magnifying people in life too! What works within these relationships is their equality. For these people feel just as lifted and motivated around us as we do around them, as each party magnifies harmoniously the other’s best qualities in a shared experience of joy, freedom and self-growth.
So how to protect yourself and repel energy stealers? Here are my top tips.
Be honest with yourself and stop trying to be liked by everyone. If someone is stealing your energy, it’s okay to feel like you don’t want to be around them. Next time you feel this way, mentally bless that person, thank them for the lesson and consider dropping them from your life. Have the strength to walk away.
You could also try writing them a letter expressing how they are stealing your energy but don’t send it. This can help to release the energetic connection. Once finished writing, destroy the letter.
Sometimes we can’t always escape from the energy stealers as they maybe a work colleague or a family member. This can be tough, and detrimental. To handle this, try and keep yourself as energetically strong as you possibly can.
You can do this by:
1) Practice meditation every morning. Meditation helps to vacuum the mind of endless thoughts so that we dive deep and release. It’s the greatest free tool I know. Once we know ourselves, fewer energy stealers come our way.
2) The possible negative impact of any time spent around an energy stealer can be counterbalanced by grounding yourself. Try going for a walk in nature, or hitting a yoga or meditation class. For some, even smelling fresh flowers can help. Choose something that will give you a strong connection to the earth element. This will help to instill a feeling of calm and peace. Slow deep breathing is great for this.
3) Each morning try energetically zipping yourself up with an imaginary energy shield before leaving the house. To do this, imagine sunlight surrounding you and weaving a protective coat. The coat will not let any negative light in, but equally it will help to attract that which is harmonious with you.
To attract positive people, try picturing the kind of friends you want. What are their qualities? This mindset shifts the focus away from what you don’t want to instead to that of what you do. Preceding this with positive affirmations like, ‘I am safe, protected and only energetically harmonious people are in my life’. This can help to magnify the process.
Finally, try not to judge or label situations or people. Remember that the people that come into our lives are often mirrors, reflecting some aspect of ourselves that we may need to work on. Act, don’t react by making yourself the best possible version of yourself that you can.
