Go! Go! Go! I use to think I had to do stuff all the time, even when I was supposed to be relaxing I would not feel right unless I had done a difficult power yoga session or some intricate pose where I would knit myself into a pretzel shape.
Don’t get me wrong there are days when I need this. However, to release and relax I feel taking things a lot slower helps to let things go. By allowing the space for change, life can be more balanced.
Here are three yoga ideas that can help to achieve a sense of release. Like with all forms of exercise, please consult your doctor before trying and exercise at your own risk.
Warm up thoroughly before doing any of the following.
The hips are said to store old emotions, and these old memories can be evoked when doing yoga poses that work on the hip area. I feel when the old feelings come up, the worst thing I can do is fight them. Instead, I steer my focus onto the breath which helps the feelings to lose their power.
A powerful hip opening yoga pose is firelog pose. Here’s me doing the pose. Try adding Firelog to your regular yoga practice.
Watch my short video. Please don’t do this pose unless you are fully warmed up. Not good to do with injuries.
It makes me sad when students miss out savasana as this is one of the most important poses.
Lie on your back with your legs as wide as your mat, palms facing up and out to the sides. Tense every part of the body and then let it go. Start from the toes and make your way up the body. A great thing to do is to tense your shoulders up towards your ears and then let it go. Tense the face, stick out your tongue and then relax. Imagine your eyeballs are sinking back into the skull. Just lie there. Thoughts may come and go: just let them. Don’t stop them, but just be: surrender and allow yourself just to let go.
See my lovely article on the benefits of this pose.
Before jumping up, lie on your side and down a few deep breaths. Coming up slowly to a comfortable seated pose, keep the eyes closed and take note of how you are feeling. Relish in your being and extend gratitude to the world and yourself for the gifts of life. Connect with this feeling memory whenever you are feeling off piste.
